When creating presentations in PowerPoint, it is not uncommon to want to diversify slides with some moving or interactive elements. One option is to insert an animated GIF image or so-called “GIF” into the PowerPoint presentation. In this article, you will learn how to do this in the PowerPoint 2010, 2013, or 2016 presentation editor.
Fortunately, this is done very simply. Gifs are inserted into a PowerPoint presentation just like any other image. For example, you can go to the "Insert" tab, click on the "Picture" button and in the window that opens, select the desired GIF animation. Or you can simply drag and drop the GIF file from any folder into the PowerPoint window. One way or another, an animated GIF image will appear in your presentation.
But, the use of animated pictures has some features. Further we will consider some of them.
GIFs are only supported starting with PowerPoint 2010. In order to use GIF animation in your presentations, you need PowerPoint 2010 or a newer version. In older versions of the editor, the animation will not work.
Animation is displayed only in viewing mode. In GIF presentation editing mode, the animation does not work and is displayed simply as a static image. But, if you start viewing the presentation, then the GIF animation will work as expected.
You cannot use effects. You also need to remember that most of the effects that you can add to an image in PowerPoint will turn an animated GIF image into a static image. For example, if you add a frame to the GIF picture, you will get a static image. At the same time, when adding GIF shadows, the animation continues to work.
GIF image can be placed on all slides. If you need to insert GIF animation on all slides of the presentation, and you want the GIF image to always be at one point on the screen, then this can also be done. To do this, simply insert a GIF image on one of the slides and place it in the place where it should be. After that, select it with the mouse and copy it using the CTRL-C key combination. After that, you need to insert a GIF image on the remaining frames using the CTRL-V combination. With such copying, the image will always be located at the same point and will not move around the screen when moving from slide to slide.
A GIF image can be pasted as a video. You can also insert an animated picture as a video. To do this, go to the "Insert" tab and click "Video - Video from Computer". After that, select the “All Files” file type and select the GIF file.
Some GIFs may not work. If you did everything right, but the animation still doesn’t play, then you should try using a different image. Perhaps with a different image, everything will work.
Add or remove an animation effect in PowerPoint 2007
Animation effects can be applied to various objects (text, picture, etc.) on a slide. Animation effects can be added using the tools: Animation and Animation Setup. These tools are located on the ribbon of the PowerPoint 2007 application window, the Animation tab (Figure 1).
To add animation in PowerPoint 2007, you need to select an object on the slide, and then select one of the specified tools. It should be noted that in the "Animation" drop-down list you can select only a limited number of effects that can be applied to objects (Fig. 2).
A more complete collection of effects is concentrated in the Animation Setup tool. When you click on the "Configure Animation" button, the task area of the same name opens with the buttons "Add Effect" and "Delete". When you click on the "Add Effect" button, a menu is displayed containing four types of animation effects: Input, Selection, Exit, Movement Paths, which have their own submenus.
For example, to the title on the title slide of the presentation "Bachelor's Robot Diploma" we add the animation effect "Color Typewriter". To do this, select the heading "Theme of graduation robot." And select the item "Color Typewriter" in the submenu (Figure 3).
If there is no effect you need in the submenu, then in the submenu you need to select "Other effects." A large collection of animation effects opens, in which choose what you need (fig. 4).
Set the beginning of the effect: "With the previous one", but you can set it to "By Click" or "After the Previous". It should be noted that several effects of animations can be applied to one object.
Slide Change Effects in PowerPoint 2007
Slide change effects are the effects of moving from one slide to another. To add the effect of changing slides, select the desired slide in the slide area and select the necessary transition method in the "Go to this slide" group on the "Animation" tab. You can also set: Transition Sound, Transition Speed, and Apply to All Slides.
For the presentation of "Bachelor's Robot Diploma" we add the effect of changing the slide "Appearance from above." In addition, set the transition speed - “Slow” and “Apply to all slides” (Figure 6). By default, the slide change is performed "On Click", but in the "Go to this slide" group you can set the mode to "Automatically after" a certain (set by the author) number of seconds.

Types of Animation
You should immediately consider all the available categories of effects that you have to work with. They are divided by area of use and the nature of the action. In total, they are divided into 4 main categories.
A group of actions that plays the appearance of an element in one of the ways. The most common types of animation in presentations are used to improve the start of each new slide. Indicated in green.
As you might guess, this group of actions serves, on the contrary, for the disappearance of an element from the screen. Most often, it is used in conjunction and sequentially with the animation of the input of identical components so that they are removed before rewinding the slide to the next. Indicated in red.
An animation that in one way or another denotes a selected element, drawing attention to it. Most often, this applies to important aspects of the slide, drawing attention to it or distracting from everything else. They are marked in yellow.
Additional actions used to change the location of slide elements in space. As a rule, this method of animation is used extremely rarely and for additional visualization of especially important moments in combination with other effects.
Now you can begin to consider the procedure for installing animation.
Different versions of Microsoft Office have different ways to create these effects. In most older versions, to configure elements of this type, you need to select the required component of the slide, right-click on it and select Animation Options or similar meanings.
The version of Microsoft Office 2016 uses a slightly different algorithm. There are two main ways.
Method 1: Quick
The simplest option, which is designed to assign a single action to a specific object.
- Effect settings are in the program header, in the corresponding tab "Animation". To get started, go to this tab.
In order to apply a special effect to an element, you first need to select the specific component of the slide (text, image, etc.) to which it will be applied. Just highlight it.
This method quickly adds effects. If the user clicks on another option, the old action will be replaced by the selected one.
Method 2: Basic
You can also select the required component, and then click on the button "Add animation" in the header section "Animation", then select the desired effect type.
This method is much better due to the fact that it allows you to overlay different animation scripts on top of each other, creating something more complex. Also, this does not replace the old attached action settings of elements.
Additional types of animation
The list in the header contains only the most popular animation options. A complete list can be obtained if you expand this list and select the option at the bottom "Additional effects ...". A window opens with a complete list of available effects options.
Animations of the three main types - input, selection and output - do not have the so-called "Skeleton animation", because they simply display the effect.
And here "Ways of moving" when superimposed on elements depict on the slide this very "skeleton" - a drawing of the route that the elements will go through.
To change it, you need to left-click on the drawn route of movement and then change it by dragging the end or the beginning in the necessary directions.
To do this, grab the circles in the corners and midpoints of the edges of the animation selection area, and then stretch it to the sides. You can also “grab” the line itself and pull it in any desired direction.
To create a move path for which a template is missing, you need the option "Custom travel path". It is usually the last on the list.
This will allow you to independently draw absolutely any trajectory of movement of any element. Of course, you need the most accurate and even drawing for the image of good movement. After the route is drawn, the skeleton of the resulting animation can also be changed as you like.
In many cases, just adding animation is not enough, you also need to configure it. To do this, use all the elements located in the header in this section.
- Paragraph "Animation" Adds effect to the selected item. Here is a simple convenient list, if necessary it can be expanded.
Button “Effect Parameters” allows you to configure more specifically this selected action. Each type of animation has its own settings.
Section "Slide Show Time" allows you to adjust the effects by duration. That is, you can choose when a particular animation starts playing, how long it will last, how fast it goes, and so on. For each action there is a corresponding item.
Section "Advanced animation" makes it possible to configure more complex types of actions.
For example, a button "Add animation" allows you to impose several effects on one element.
"Animation Area" allows you to call up a separate menu on the side to view the sequence of configured actions on a single item.
Paragraph "Animation patterned" Designed to distribute the same type of special effects settings to the same elements on different slides.
Button "Trigger" allows you to assign more complex conditions to trigger actions. This is especially useful for elements that have multiple effects.
Optional: criteria and tips
There are certain standard criteria for using animation in presentations at a professional or competitive level:
- In total, the duration of playing all the animation elements on a slide should take no more than 10 seconds of time. There are two most popular formats - either 5 seconds to enter and exit, or 2 seconds to enter and exit, and 6 to highlight important points in the process.
- Some types of presentations have their own type of time-sharing of animation elements, when they can take almost the full duration of each slide. But such a design should justify itself in one way or another. For example, if such an approach is based on the whole essence of visualizing a slide and information on it, and not just using it for decoration.
- Similar effects also load the system. This can be imperceptible with small examples, since modern devices boast good performance. However, serious projects with the inclusion of a huge package of media files may have difficulty working.
- When using travel routes, it is worthwhile to carefully monitor so that the mobile element does not go beyond the boundaries of the screen even for a split second. This demonstrates the lack of professionalism of the creator of the presentation.
- It is highly discouraged to apply animations to video files and GIF images. Firstly, there are frequent cases of distortion of the media file after the trigger is triggered. Secondly, even with high-quality settings, a crash may occur and the file will begin to play even during the action. Roughly speaking, it is better not to experiment.
- You cannot make an animation excessively fast in order to save time. If there is a strict regulation, it is better to completely abandon this mechanics. Effects, in the first place, are a visual complement, so they should at least not annoy the person. Excessively fast and not smooth movements do not cause viewing pleasure.
In the end, I would like to note that at the dawn of PowerPoint, animation was an additional decorating element. Today, no professional presentation is complete without these effects. It is extremely important to practice creating spectacular and functional animated elements in order to achieve maximum quality from each slide.

Adding an Animation Effect
Animating any fixed object, including text, involves 4 steps.
- Select the object that you want to animate (resizing markers should appear around it).
- Tab "Animation" click on "Add animation".
- Select the desired effect.
- Define the effect parameters.
When choosing effects, remember that some of them are available exclusively as animating text in PowerPoint. This applies to effects such as "Whip", "Wave", "Fall" and several others.
To add to the existing animation an additional effect, you will need to perform 3 consecutive actions.
- Click Add Animation.
- Mark the desired effect.
- Click the "With Previous" item in the "Animation Area" section.
Advice! Make sure that the tincture of the slide show is not marked “No animation”. If it is installed, the animation will not be played during the slide show, but only when previewed. So, all efforts will go down the drain.
PowerPoint offers 3 options for launching effects:
- On click (the effect turns on after clicking on the slide),
- "With the previous" (the launch occurs at the same time as the previous effect),
- "After the previous" (the effect is reproduced upon completion of the previous animation, and there is no need to click anything).
If all the effects of animation are enough, then it is better to refuse the “on click” option. Its use requires more time, which increases the risk of dispersing the speaker's attention.
Let's consider how to make an animation of a picture in PowerPoint using one of the above launch options.
- Select the effect you want to edit.
- In the tab "Animation" click on "Start".
- Select the desired metric.
Defining the order in which effects are displayed
The following instruction will help you determine the order in which effects will be shown.
- Click Animation> Animation Area.
- Highlight an effect that does not stand still in the animation order.
- In point Reorder Animation select Move Forward or Move back.
The above commands can be used several times in a row.
In this case, you need the parameter "Duration". Using it is very simple.
- Highlight the effect to be edited.
- In field "Duration" enter the desired number using the keypad.
The minimum display duration is 0.01 s and the maximum is 59 s.
It is worth mentioning about the parameter "Delay"defining the length of time before turning on a particular effect. This time interval starts after the previous effect is completed or after an additional click.
How to remove animation in PowerPoint?
When an animation effect is assigned to an object, a small numerical mark appears near it. It confirms the presence of an effect and indicates its position in the order of animation on a particular slide. This designation can be used to remove animations. How?
- Select the number next to the unnecessary animation.
- Click "DELETE".
How to insert animation into a PowerPoint 2010 presentation?
The instructions below will provide one object with several effects.
- Open "Animation".
- Select the desired object.
- Choose one of the effects suggested in the group. "Animation".
- Go to the section Advanced Animationby clicking "Add animation". If the required effects are not in the main list, select "Additional effects ...".
- Select one of the available effects.
- On the left side of the tape, click "View".

- Numeric labels indicate the playback order of effects. They can also be seen on a slide next to animated objects.
- Icons indicate the types of animation used.
- Timelines provide the duration of effects. To view the start time of all effects, click on the menu icon next to one of the effects and select Hide extended timeline.
PowerPoint Animation Effects: A General Feature
At the moment, animation in a PowerPoint presentation involves the use of 4 groups of effects.
- Input effects (the appearance of objects on the slide). We are talking about the gradual appearance on the slide, the sudden appearance or implementation of the side.
- Highlight effects (animation of objects located on a slide). This group can be used to change the color or size of the object.
- Exit effects (disappearance of objects from the slide). In this case, objects can disappear from view or move in different ways.
- Travel ways (moving objects on a slide). When using effects of this type, objects move in different directions (down, up, right, left, or along the contour of a certain shape). The ability to create your own travel path is also available.
Each of the above effects can be applied both individually and in combination with others. For example, input effects are useful in the process of creating educational presentations. When using them, the audience will not be distracted by the text, which is not yet discussed.
Highlighting effects will be useful when you need to draw viewers to a specific part of the slide, such as a drawing line or an important part in a structure. But the option "Movement paths" is the best tool for showing dynamics.
Note. After using the first effect, you can add additional animation only by clicking "Add Animation". Otherwise, you risk simply replacing the current animation with a new one.
The combination of animation with sound effects
This trick is usually used to give the animation more depth and to draw extra attention to it. The following actions will help to sound the animation of the object.
- In the tab "Animation" click "Animation Area". To the right of the area with the slide, a new window opens with the characteristics of the applied animation effects.
- Identify the effect that requires voice acting.
- Click the down arrow and select “Effect Parameters”.
- In the dialog that appears, select the tab "Effect".
- In point "Extra options" open the field "Sound" and select one of the possible options for voice acting or add your own sound file (point “Another sound”).
- Click OK.
When you click OK, the animation should begin playing with sound. To edit the sound volume in the “Effect” tab (“Effect Settings” dialog box), click the speaker icon and drag the slider in the appropriate direction.
Moderation and relevance are key principles when working with animation effects.
Animation, of course, adds a presentation of dynamics, focuses on individual ideas and makes the information presented more memorable. But this does not mean that before making the animation in PowerPoint, you can forget about moderation. Excessive animation effects can irritate viewers. “Little by little” is the main principle that you should adhere to.
It is also worth considering the appropriateness of the animation or its specific type for a particular effect. For example, flickering animation is recommended to be used only in extreme cases, since it gives a big load on the eyes and nervous system. It is especially important to remember moderation and relevance when you think about how to animate text in PowerPoint. Some types of effects can distract the attention of the audience from the essence of the report or distort it.
