Blackberry belongs to the family Rosaceae, the genus Rubus (Rubus) and has more than 200 species in nature. Since time immemorial, people have been enjoying the wonderful berries that often grow on the outskirts of villages, behind gardens.

Blackberries were often used as hedges, which neither beast nor humans can defeat. And black and blue berries were an indispensable component of the diet of the whole family. The amazing qualities of blackberries are reflected in ancient legends. According to one of them, blackberries are drops of titan blood that shed it on the ground in a battle with the gods.

The economic value of a blackberry is difficult to overestimate. As medicinal raw materials, inflorescences, fruits, leaves, shoots and roots are used. Blackberry Berries Contain:

  • up to 13% sugars (glucose and fructose),
  • up to 1.5% organic acids (malic, citric, acetylsalicylic, tartaric, etc.),
  • 1.8% pectin substances
  • up to 4% fiber
  • vitamins C, E, groups B and P,
  • carotene,
  • tannins,
  • pigments
  • salts of potassium, manganese, copper, calcium, phosphorus, iron, etc.

The rich biochemical composition determines unique healing properties - blackberries are a real pharmacy for the human body. In addition, blackberries contain adsorbents that remove toxins from the human body. Moreover, the adsorbents are preserved during processing, which significantly increases the nutritional value of berries.

The productivity of blackberries and its hybrids is several times higher than that of raspberries. Blackberry berries are superior to raspberries in the content of biologically active substances, they contain more organic acids, P-active substances, a wide range of trace elements.

The berries of the blackberry are denser, therefore they are not damaged during harvesting, they are easily separated from the calyx with the fruit, they are perfectly transported, practically do not mold and can be stored in the refrigerator for a long time.

Blackberry industrial cultivation

Blackberry berries are distinguished by their delicate taste and aroma; they combine sugar and acid very harmoniously. They are consumed fresh and dried. They are added to dried fruits for compote, jam, jam, jam, marmalade, marshmallow, jelly, drinks and wines are prepared from them. The blackberry is perfectly frozen. It is also used as a food coloring.

Due to its advantages, blackberries in many countries have become widespread as an industrial culture. For example, in the Tavrida Gardens OJSC of the Bakhchisarai district of Crimea for the fourth year after planting, the yield of blackberry was more than 200 c / ha. Chemical treatment against pests and diseases was not required, row-spacings were not cultivated under sod, rainy summers made it possible to do almost without watering - environmentally friendly products were in great demand. Why not engage in the industrial cultivation of blackberries for large and small farmers, summer residents and industrialists?

The main reason for the small distribution of blackberries in summer cottages and farmers' plots is the lack of basic information about varietal seedlings. For everyone today, the word “blackberry” is associated with its wild-growing forms, found in abundance in forests, mountains and ravines - incredibly spiky branches with leaves strewn from the back with the same thorns and small, but tasty berries. While you get a berry, you will hurt your hands and tear your clothes.

Modern varieties of blackberries are usually bearingless, their productivity is much higher than that of wild plants. The berries are large, juicy, with small seeds, have a set of valuable dietary and medicinal qualities.

Know when the blackberry is ripe

Depending on the blackberry varieties, the ripening time stretches from mid-July to the end of August. Garden blackberry ripens by mid-July, and wild - begins to bear fruit in August. You can also meet new hybrid varieties, which can give two crops per season. The vegetation period of the plant is 1.5–2 months.

In central Ukraine, blackberries are called burns, and in the Caucasus, blackberries. In the photo - there are unripe pink fruits. Berries are not sung at the same time, so they harvest in several stages - until late autumn

Ripening also depends on the location of the blackberry. For example:

  • in central Russia, this berry ripens in late July,
  • in colder regions, blackberries ripen in mid-August.
Sometimes all the fruits do not have time to ripen - to fix this, you need to cut branches with green berries and put them in water. Blackberry will quickly finish and will be very tasty

It is very important not to miss the ripening of the blackberry - the ripened berries quickly fall off and lose their sweet taste.

Signs of ripeness:

  • berries should be black with a gray coating
  • the consistency is soft
  • a small hole in the center of the drupe is completely filled,
  • ripe berries are easily separated from the stem.
In the photo ripe berries - black, a characteristic gray plaque, soft, easy to remove from the branch

Follow the rules for picking berries

When picking blackberries - collection rules:

  1. For berries should go in warm and dry weather, then they will be juicy and sweet. After rain, the fruits absorb a lot of moisture, and the taste will be watery.
  2. Berries are picked in the morning after sunrise.
  3. If you go for forest berries, then choose bushes that are located further from the road.
  4. Peel the berries carefully. To keep them longer, leave the stalk.
  5. Cover the collected berries from direct sunlight.
  6. Ripe fruits are very tender so they do not crumple - do not shake the container.
Ripe blackberries are juicy and soft, do not squeeze the fruits during collection, do not shake the container, otherwise the berries will choke

Properly care for blackberries

Step 1. Lighting

  • the shrub likes well-lit areas, but can grow in the shade,
  • the blackberry ripen in the shade is slower and the berries will not be very large
Step 2. Watering

  • the blackberry is drought-resistant, but during flowering and ripening requires abundant watering,
  • take warm water, rain water is best
Step 3. Cropping

  • in the early spring, summer and autumn, pruning is carried out - the formation of a bush,
  • all diseased, frozen, dried up and too long shoots are cut off,
  • the stronger the pruning of the bush, the larger the berries will be,
  • to get a crop next year, they pinch young shoots that have reached a height of 1 meter,
  • leave 10-12 buds on each stem
Step 4. Wintering

  • most varieties winter well
  • stems of thermophilic species bend to the ground and cover for the winter,
  • usually used for shelter is spruce branches, dry leaves, plastic film
Step 5. Fertilizers

  • feed the plant during flowering - once a year,
  • for this, manure, peat, bird droppings, ashes are used
Step 6. Loosening and mulching

  • during flowering and ripening weeds must be removed,
  • · Regularly loosen the soil,
  • loosening is carried out 5-6 times for the current year
Step 7. Landing

  • planted bushes in the spring, after frost, when the earth has already warmed up,
  • before planting the shoots are soaked in water for 12 hours,
  • the pit should be deeper than the length of the roots,
  • phosphate-potassium fertilizers and cow manure are added to the hole,
  • bushes are planted at a distance of 1.5–2 m from each other,
  • in one place a blackberry is able to produce a crop of 10-15 years
Step 8. Disease Protection

  • for prophylaxis against diseases, it is necessary to spray with a solution of one percent Bordeaux fluid

Blackberry berries are medicinal; they are used to treat diabetes, insomnia, and inflammatory joint diseases.

  1. Know the ripening period. It lasts from late summer to mid-autumn.
  2. Distinguish ripe berries. They are saturated black with a bluish sheen, and taste sweet and sour.
  3. Remember, garden bushes ripen faster than forest bushes. This is due to the abundant lighting in the garden.
  4. Do not wait for the fruit in the first year of planting. Berries are formed only on biennial shoots.
  5. Trim stems 1–2 m in height. So that the berries are very large.
  6. Insulate the plant for the winter. In order for the blackberry bushes to winter well, it is better to insulate them with spruce branches, dry leaves or a film.
  7. Watering blackberry bushes. During the period of drought, when the berries ripen, when the blackberry sings, you need to water the plant abundantly.
  8. Feed the shrub. Fertilizers should be applied once a year during the flowering period.

Deficient Berry

And so on the site planted a variety of Agavam. Its productivity is large, the berries are large. The variety is resistant to drought, unpretentious, although it freezes in harsh winters. But it recovers well, especially after top dressing with organics. In a word, everything with this berry is good, except for one thing - the blackberry has increased spiky. If you do not pay attention to him, after a year on the site you can get impenetrable spiky jungle.

Turnich for bushes

To protect ourselves from injuries during the harvest, we need to make four pipes deeper (about 1 m) at a distance of 80 cm from each other. They made a sort of “turnstile” - a trellis 1.2 m high and 2.5 long. Cut old shoots that have been thawed and removed from the horizontal bar. Tie plants of 4-5 pieces with a rope to the trellis at a distance of about 25 cm from each other. It turned out two straight rows, between which you can go and go around.

Now, when the berry ripens, its children will be able to eat right from the bush. When the harvest is large, we make jam, but be sure to mix it with other berries - raspberries, plums, late honeysuckle, as the blackberry tastes a bit fresh.

Often in home gardens you can find a berry culture that looks a bit like raspberries, but differs from it in the color of berries - it is garden blackberry - a cultural relative of blackberries, gray, which has long been revered for its medicinal properties. Rubus caesius - so called blackberry in Latin - is in biological relationship with raspberries, so plants have much in common. The dark purple berries of garden blackberries differ from raspberries in their refined, sour taste, and in terms of productivity, the culture can sometimes give odds to raspberries themselves.

The chemical composition of medicinal raw materials

Blackberry berries are harvested gradually, in several stages. Unlike raspberries, they almost do not deform when harvested, are distinguished by better transportability and longer stored at zero temperature.

For fruiting, each year they leave 3-4 shoots in erect blackberry varieties, and 5-7 shoots in creeping ones. Branches are shortened by 20–25 cm, and in the presence of a large number of flower buds, by 12–15 cm. After harvesting, old branches are cut out and new shoots are tied to supports in spring.

All subsequent years of the bush's life, it needs to be fed once a year, best of all with manure, peat or ash. Several times during the summer season, a blackberry bush should be fed with bird droppings.

Blackberry as a remedy

A full-scale study of the composition of the roots of blackberries has not been conducted, since they are not used in official medicine.Garden blackberries are less demanding than raspberries, but they need an “eye and an eye” - a culture requires the constant formation of a bush, is able to quickly occupy new territories and, with improper care, quickly runs wild. If raspberry propagates by the root shoot, and its aggressiveness can be limited by sorrel sowing, then this measure does not hold back the blackberry - the plant is able to take root by the tops of the branches, so it easily overcomes the obstacle.Author, V. G. Shafransky, Ekaterinburg

To make it easier to pick berries, blackberries need to be tied up with a wire trellis. To do this, shoots are spread on both sides of the base and in the form of a fan are fixed to the wire at an equal distance from each other. In the summer, when flowers and fruits appear on them, new shoots will grow from the center of the bush, which must be let out vertically, tying them with a loose bunch in the middle of the fan.Pricking about a blackberry:If you dream that you are tangled in blackberry bushes:

Therefore, her shelter must be approached carefully. In the first year after planting, a blackberry is unlikely to produce a crop. But this fact does not exclude the necessary measures. For example, in the summer, any sort of shoot, even upright, is best tied to a horizontal trellis, and you need to do this with all the shoots in one direction. Next year, the direction of the garter of new shoots should become the opposite. This will contribute to the proper formation of the bush.-

Blackberry fruits are rich in vitamins (carotene, ascorbic acid, B vitamins) and organic acids, among which the highest proportion is malic acid. In terms of carbohydrate content, blackberries are inferior to raspberries, so they have a pleasant sour taste. Glucose, fructose and sugar are distributed respectively, as 3.16%: 3.14%: 0.95%. The optimal balance of sugars and organic acids gives blackberries an advantage over raspberries for consumption by people with diabetes. Blackberries also accumulate a large number of macro- and microelements, the content of which varies depending on the growing conditions.

Garden blackberries yield only grapes in productivity. Her direct relative - raspberries, so beloved by all gardeners, loses to her in this matter very significantly.

Many knowledgeable gardeners recommend acting according to the following scheme. In the spring, annual and biennial shoots need to be cut to one level, everything else should be removed almost completely. Harvest from two-year-olds and also trim them thoroughly.

Blackberry biological description

Blackberry is a shrub with creeping or erect shoots. The blackberry root is long-term, powerful, penetrates deeply into the soil, which determines the drought tolerance of the plant and allows it to be grown even on steep slopes prone to erosion and the formation of landslides.

The aerial part of the blackberry is two years old, like raspberries. In the first year, young shoots grow on which the crop of the next year is laid. In the second year, inflorescences appear on them, berries ripen. And by winter, these shoots die off, giving way to new ones.

Blackberry rhizomes give substitution shoots, that is, every year the bush has lashes of the first and second years - some grow, others bear fruit. The leaves are palmate, with three, five or seven leaves, pubescent, with serrated edges.

The flowering of blackberries begins in late May, which protects the bushes from spring frosts. Under favorable conditions, the blackberry blooms until autumn. The flowers in racemose inflorescences are bisexual, self-pollinating, large, with a double perianth. There are a lot of stamens and pistils, pollen and nectar, so bees, flies and bumblebees pay close attention to them, providing additional pollination and increasing the yield.

Each blackberry flower is fragrant in general, but the plant can bloom for several months. First, the petals are opened in the upper part of the inflorescence, gradually flowering drops to the base and ends with the lowest flowers.

In July, the first fruits ripen, the harvest of blackberries begins. Berries not only on one plant, but also in one inflorescence unevenly matureTherefore, the crop is harvested in stages, until the end of October - beginning of November, which allows you to stretch their fresh consumption for a long period.

Blackberry fruits - a combined drupe, conventionally called a berry. Individual drupes are firmly connected to each other and with a soft white bearing and, unlike raspberries, are not separated from the bearing.

The berries are round and conical in shape, the color of different varieties varies from black to red, purple, purple, yellow and white.

In total, more than 300 blackberry varieties are known, which differ from each other by ripening time, the shape and color of berries, resistance to diseases and pests, the shape and color of shoots and leaves. The absolute leader in the cultivation of blackberries is the United States, where more than thirty varieties have been introduced into the culture and harvest tens of thousands of tons of delicacies from an area of 16,000 hectares.

Agrotechnics Blackberry Thornfrey: Features of Growing

It is worth noting the high decorativeness of blackberry plantings. For example, in the uncorrelated Thornfrey variety, shoots reaching are covered with large glossy dark green leaves that turn crimson in the fall and burn under the snow almost until spring.

If you raise the blackberry shoots on a support (trellis, fence, gazebo), you will get a spectacular hedge that looks different at different times of the year. During prolonged flowering, the plant is covered with large (up to in diameter), white with a pink tint flowers, which much more decorative jasmine. Later, the bushes are covered with carmine, dark purple and, finally, black, sparkling scattering of granular ripe berries.

The berries are large, with a diameter of up to 3 cm, sour-sweet, of good quality, transportable. Fruiting is stretched from July to October. Protection from pests and diseases does not require.

Planting is carried out according to the scheme 2.8-3.0 × 1.5-2.0 m (about 2 thousand plants per 1 ha). In household conditions, when the use of equipment is not intended, planting can be denser.

Since seedlings give the first fruits (the so-called signal yield) already in the nursery, then in the planting year you can harvest quite enough, and in the second - an industrial crop, which allows you to recoup most of the costs incurred for laying the berry.

There are no tricks in the preparation of the soil, since the blackberry culture is extremely insensitive to its quality. After continuous plowing, pits with a diameter of 60 cm and a depth of 70 cm are drilled to a depth of 30 cm, local loosening is done. With a large deficit of any nutrients, they are introduced under plowing or at the bottom of the pit, which is then covered with the upper layer of soil.

After planting, the plant is watered twice, with an interval of so that there are no voids in the soil, from which the root system suffers.

Best blackberry planting dates - in the fall - 2 weeks before frosts, in the early spring - before the beginning of active vegetation.

Blackberry seedlings will feel better if the seat is immediately mulled by last year's darkened sawdust. If the sawdust is fresh, they must be soaked well and mixed with humus.

In the future, as necessary, you can feed the blackberry with organic or mineral fertilizers, as it is very responsive to additional nutrition and watering.

In the south, it is better to put the trellis out of reinforced concrete stakes 2.4 m high (as in a vineyard), which are buried in the ground at a distance of 6 m, and to the extreme, "anchor" column, they put a support from the same stake at an angle of Z0— 40 degrees. The first wire is pulled at a height of 80 cm, the next two - through each other.

Young shoots periodically tie up and, directing in the direction where they grow, create a fan formation. With green pruning, no more than ten shoots are left per 1 m of trellis. Length - within which the lashes are cut off approximately in the middle, then they are evenly tied to the trellis.

The shorter the pruning, the larger the berries, although you should not be too zealous, since you can get the opposite effect - an excessively short pruning can provoke violent growth of vegetative shoots.

After harvesting, the fertilized biennial shoots are removed. From the annuals they remove all weak, damaged, thickening and deformed ones.

To date, the most technologically advanced and cost-effective irrigation is drip, although other methods will give a good effect, especially during flowering and pouring berries. Such simple care allows you to annually receive a plentiful harvest.

We are sure that blackberry, a native culture for our regions, will take its rightful place in personal plots and summer cottages, in farm and collective gardens. In our country, the blackberry has a great future, and the one who puts it on his own joy and health, does not fail.

For medicinal purposes, use leaves and ripe blackberry fruits. The leaves should be young, but already fully unfolded. Therefore, the ideal time to collect them is late spring. Immediately after harvesting, the leaves are dried in a dark, well-ventilated area. Sometimes they even recommend artificial heating (temperature not higher than +40 ° C).

In blackberry leaves contains tannins, organic acids, flavonoids, vitamin C and a small amount of essential oil. Due to the presence of tannins, blackberry leaves are a mild astringent that is well suited for the treatment of mild intestinal diseases accompanied by diarrhea.
