Reader's diary on literature: how to properly arrange the diary and templates for filling


Recently, more and more often in schools, teachers of literature instruct students to write a review about the book. And if earlier such a task was given only after the summer holidays, now it can be given at any time of the school year. And they give out the task, but to explain exactly how it should be carried out, they usually either forget it or cannot say it clearly.

Let's try to figure it out for ourselves. After all, who better than writers to know what can and should be said about their books? Even at school. 🙂

By the way, why do we need reviews at all - both for readers and writers - the topic is also very interesting, but we will talk about it separately.

What should be in a school review of a read book?

First of all, we will determine: review is your personal opinion of what you read, your rating of the book. And this opinion should be justified. How to do this?

First, be sure to tell me what feelings the book you read evoked: what pleased you, what saddened you, and what made you angry - and why.

Secondly, note a few points that you especially “hooked”: it may be a hero, or his actions, or the situation itself, which the author talks about. And again - explain why it hooked you.

Well, and thirdly, tell me what has become most valuable to you in the story you read.

Step-by-step review plan (memo for writing)

1. Look at the author and title of the book. Do you know the author? What do you know about him? Mention the important. What about the title of the book? Is it interesting? Maybe creates a mood or hints what awaits in the book? Say a few words about this.

2. You have indicated the author and title. Now it's time to move on to the main part of the review: answer the main question - what is this book about? What is the main idea of ​​history? What does she teach?

Note! There is no need to retell the book in detail. It is important to formulate the main idea of ​​the work.

For example:
"Chestnut" by A.P. Chekhov
This is a story about dog devotion. About how a small red dog was first lost and got to the circus performer, and then, despite the well-fed life and affectionate attitude of the second owner, she still returned to the joiner and his son.

It is, of course, advisable to write briefly, but not missing important. Two or three sentences will be enough.

3. Next we say the main thing: like the book or not. And be sure to disclose - why?

What has pleased you with the story? What did you learn? What seemed the most interesting? Do you agree with the actions of the heroes, or perhaps you would act differently? Suddenly you even have advice suitable for one of the characters in the book. 🙂 Write about everything that comes to mind. In a book review, it’s better to say too much than to say nothing. And you always have time to cut!

4. Separately, say a few words about the heroes of the book. Who do you consider to be the main character? Whom - minor characters, helpers, villains, etc.? Tell us if you like them. Maybe you would like to make friends with someone?

5. We pass to the conclusion. Draw a conclusion - what did the read book teach you? What has become most valuable to you in it? What do you understand?

Cheat sheet to help write a review

You can use the following synonyms and expressions:

  • book (work, novel, story, novel, fairy tale, story)
  • I liked this book (remember, attracted my attention, left an impression, deeply touched, attracted attention, very impressed, takes for the soul ...)
  • interesting book (fascinating, exciting, entertaining, impressive, curious, flashing into memory, bewitching, etc.)
  • the author tells (shows, describes, says, depicts life, illustrates, introduces ..., outlines a range of issues such as ...)
  • I especially like the main character of the story (expensive, interesting, pretty, intriguing, attractive, touched me ...)

Perhaps the following expressions are also useful:

  • this tale (story, book) allows us to conclude ...
  • it’s easy to read this book, it has interesting (beautiful) illustrations, the author writes in simple language ...

As you can see, writing a good review is easy. The main thing is to think carefully and take advantage of our tips and a step-by-step plan.

Reader Diary Design Templates

Many adults do not pay enough attention to the format and appearance of the reader's diary, and children do not feel like filling out them. But let's think: what are the motives for reading a child? Why does he read (especially children up to grade 6)? Why is he filling out a diary? It is unlikely that at this age he does this consciously, most likely, he was simply "forced". But we must remember that it may just be interesting for children to work in a large and beautiful notebook, fill out tablets, etc. Therefore, we propose to pay special attention to the design of the reader's diary and offer several templates.

Types of Reader Diaries

Depending on the goal that the teacher pursues, there are several types of diaries:

  • diary report on the number of pages read to oneself or aloud, marks of parents who read with the child. The following columns can be here: number, title of the work and name of the author, number of pages read, type of reading (aloud and to oneself), signature of parents. Used in elementary grades.
  • diary report on read books. Only book titles, author names, reading dates (June 2014, August 2014, etc.) are taken into account. There may also be “marginal notes,” that is, brief remarks about the book.
  • crib diary with mini-analysis of works. We will talk more about him.

What should be in the reader's diary and how to fill it out?

  • Name of the author of the work
  • Title of the work
  • Number of pages
  • The genre of the work (poem, novel, story, etc.)
  • In which year the work was written. What is this year known in history? What was the situation in the country where the author lived?
  • The main characters. You can simply indicate their names, but you can give a brief description: age, relationships with other characters (elder brother, father, friend, etc.), appearance, favorite activities, habits, you can list the page numbers on which the author gives a description to the hero. Do you want to be like a hero? Why?
  • The plot, that is, what is described in the book.
  • Feedback on the book.
  • List of key episodes in a book with page numbers.
  • The era in which the work takes place, or specific years. Who was in power then? In which country or city is the action taking place?

High school students may also provide additional information:

  • List of critical literature by work or author.
  • Extracts of phrases, expressions you like.
  • Brief biography of the writer.

In addition to the usual information, you need to give the child the opportunity to draw in the reader's diary, do crosswords, scanwords, puzzles, also write a letter to the author of the book or heroes and so on.

Reader Diary Check

If you as a teacher asked students to keep diaries, then take the time and the opportunity to check them, even if you asked in May, leaving for the holidays. Your approval of his work is important to the child. But it is better to work on extracurricular reading and with reading diaries systematically.
