How to connect a toggle switch

The toggle switch is an electrical component that controls the flow of electricity through the circuit through a mechanical lever, which, in turn, is manually controlled. Although there are different types of toggle switches, in general they are designed to switch all the circuits connected to it. Typically, toggle switches are installed in devices that previously did not have similar means of regulating additional operations. For example, a person can put a toggle switch in a car to adjust the aftermarket LED backlight system. See step 1 to start installing the toggle switch yourself.

Illuminated toggle switch:

The toggle switch is mainly a miniature mechanical switch or switch. It is used almost everywhere where electrical switching is needed (control circuits in electronic and mechanical devices and devices). A very convenient kind of toggle switches quite often used in electronics is a toggle switch with backlight. Such a device not only connects-breaks the circuit, but also has a light inside which serves as an indicator of the voltage supply to the circuit, figure No. 1.

Installation procedure - everything is simple and concise

The backlight circuit breaker connection diagram is based on the following sequence of actions:

  • de-energized the lighting circuit. For reliability, the absence of voltage is checked using a probe or multimeter,
  • in the opening in the wall, a box for the switch is installed and fixed. When replacing the old one, it is first dismantled,
  • the key is removed from the switch and the power wires are connected. Parallel to the cables, the outputs of the backlight indicator are connected,
  • the switch housing is installed in the box and secured with screws,
  • turning on the network and the switch, its backlight and the lighting network.

Connecting a toggle switch with backlight using automobile convectors or by soldering wires to their conclusions, but this is not the most difficult and certainly everyone knows. But many beginner hams often do not know which side they will approach the backlit toggle switch and how to turn it on correctly.

Firstly, you just need to look at the directory type and purpose of the conclusions of your toggle switch. Secondly, it’s enough just to ring your tumblr with a tester to understand what’s switching to what’s what and how.

After you find out what conclusion is responsible for what, the main thing is to correctly include the toggle switch in your circuit figure number 2.

As can be seen from Figure 2, the toggle switch is turned on in such a way as to break the phase wire, and so that when the circuit is switched (contact closure), its internal illumination will light up.

DIY backlight

As can be seen from the previous material, installing a backlit switch is not a very difficult task. In addition, it is entirely within its power to remake a conventional switch for these purposes. DIY LED backlighting is the most common option in modern conditions.


The circuit of such a backlight consists of an LED, a limiting resistor, and a diode connected in parallel with the LED to protect it from breakdown by reverse voltage. For a domestic LED type AL307 red should have a nominal value of 100 kOhm and a power of at least 1 W. As a protective, you can use a diode type KD521. The disadvantage of the scheme is its high power, which can be up to 1 kWh per month.

To save energy, you can use a circuit in which to limit the current of the LED is used with a capacity of 1 μF. In series with the capacitor, a resistor limiting the current of its charge is switched on (100-500 Ohms).

The disadvantage of this circuit is the use of a capacitor with large dimensions, which can complicate the installation of the circuit in the switch.

The disadvantage of LED backlight circuits is that such circuits work well only for incandescent lamps. If there is a lamp, then with such a backlight scheme, they will blink and glow when the switch is off. If there are LEDs in the lamp, the backlight scheme for them does not work at all. This is due to the high resistance of the LED lamp.

To control separate light sources from two, three or more places in rooms, corridors and stairwells is introduced. This is not so difficult to do, especially with the detailed step-by-step installation guide at hand.

One of the ways to automatically turn on the light is connected to the bulbs, which respond to any movement in the radius of its visibility.

A simpler and more reliable circuit on a neon lamp includes, in addition to the lamp itself, a series-connected resistor with a resistance of 0.5-1.0 mOhm.

Installing a homemade light switch is simple.

A lamp or LED is mounted on the switch housing with glue, and a small hole is drilled in the key for light.

Connecting such a backlight indicator is done in the same way as industrial.

  1. To increase comfort when turning on the lights in the dark, a backlit switch is used.
  2. The backlight circuit can be performed on an LED or a neon lamp. When choosing the type of backlight, it is necessary to consider the type of lamp.
  3. Installing a backlit switch is quite simple and is not much different from connecting a simple switch.
  4. The simplicity of the backlight circuit allows you to upgrade a conventional switch and make a backlit switch out of it.

It's good that I put it through the relay.
MT1 is a bad toggle switch. The operating voltage is 250 V. but the operating current is only 3A. This is very small for lighting. At the same time, it costs about 370 rubles now. what a horror.
It’s easier to buy a toggle switch of type MA111 on-off, for 15 A, 250 V. Personally, I installed it myself, without a relay, of course, I don’t eat more than 3 A devices, a decent supply of 12 A. And the price tag is 60 rubles. not annoying much.
Although it was possible to supply the ASW-15D-R, it is already backlit even with a working voltage of 12 V, as much as 20 A withstands the working current.
