How to restore the laptop to factory settings

Repair your laptop if it malfunctions or if the Windows operating system does not boot. First, try to restore the system, that is, return it to the state when it worked normally, if you do not want to lose important data, it is recommended to try to restore the system. If system recovery did not work, use a special system recovery disk or a system installation disk to reset the notebook to factory settings.

When to restore the factory settings on the laptop does not work

The most common situation in which restoring a laptop to factory settings may not work - if Windows was reinstalled on it. As I already wrote in the article “Reinstalling Windows on a laptop”, many users, having bought a laptop computer, delete the bundled Windows 7 or Windows 8 OS and install Windows 7 Ultimate, simultaneously deleting the hidden recovery partition on the laptop’s hard drive. This hidden section contains all the necessary data in order to restore the factory settings of the laptop.

It should be noted that when you call “computer repair” and the wizard reinstalls Windows, the same thing happens in 90% of cases - the recovery section is deleted due to the lack of professionalism, unwillingness to work, or personal conviction of the wizard that the pirated build of Windows 7 is good, and the built-in recovery partition, which allows the client not to go to computer help, is not needed.

Thus, if any of this has been done, then there are few options - look for a recovery disk or an image of the laptop recovery partition on the network (found on torrents, in particular on rutracker) or take on a clean installation of Windows on a laptop. In addition, several manufacturers offer to buy recovery discs on official sites.

In other cases, returning the laptop to the factory settings is easy enough, although the steps required for this are slightly different, depending on the brand of the laptop. I’ll tell you right away what happens when restoring factory settings:

  1. All user data will be deleted (in some cases, only from “Drive C”, everything will remain on drive D as before).
  2. The system partition will be formatted and Windows will be automatically reinstalled. Key entry is not required.
  3. As a rule, after the first start of Windows, the automatic installation of all system (and not so) programs and drivers that were preinstalled by the laptop manufacturer will begin.

Thus, if you carry out the recovery process from start to finish, in the software part you will receive the laptop in the condition it was when you bought it in the store. It is worth noting that this will not solve the hardware and some other problems: for example, if the laptop itself turned off during games due to overheating, then most likely it will continue to do so.

Factory settings for Asus laptop

In order to restore the factory settings of Asus laptops, computers of this brand have a convenient, quick and easy recovery utility. Here is a step-by-step instruction for its use:

  1. Disable the quick boot (Boot Booster) in the BIOS - this feature speeds up the computer boot and is enabled on Asus laptops by default. To do this, turn on your laptop and immediately after starting the download, press F2, as a result of which you will have to get into the BIOS settings, where this function is turned off. Use the arrows to go to the “Boot” tab, select “Boot Booster”, press Enter and select “Disabled”. Go to the last tab, select “Save changes and exit”. The laptop will restart automatically. Turn it off after that.
  2. In order to restore the Asus laptop to the factory settings, turn it on and press the F9 key, you should see the boot screen.
  3. The recovery program will prepare the files necessary for the operation, after which you will be asked if you really want to produce it. All your data will be deleted.
  4. After that, the process of restoring and reinstalling Windows occurs automatically, without user intervention.
  5. During the recovery process, the computer will restart several times.

HP Notebook Factory Settings

To restore factory settings on your HP laptop, turn it off and unplug all flash drives from it, remove memory cards, and more.

  1. Turn on the laptop and press the F11 key until the HP Notebook Recovery Utility - Recovery Manager appears. (You can also run this utility on Windows, finding it in the list of installed programs).
  2. Select “System Recovery”
  3. You will be prompted to save the necessary data, you can do it.
  4. After that, the process of restoring factory settings will go on automatically, the computer may restart several times.

Upon completion of the recovery program, you will receive an HP laptop with Windows installed, all HP drivers and branded programs.

Situations when resetting is not possible

If the device has previously undergone a reinstallation of the operating system, it will not be possible to restore the settings. Removing the version of Windows installed by the laptop manufacturer, users along with it delete the hidden section of the hard drive, where the data needed to resume is located.

Unfortunately, this is not only a problem for inexperienced users. In most computer services, the so-called “computer repair wizards” also delete the resume section.

The reason is simple - unwillingness to work and really understand their specialization. Do not rush to spend money - if the factory OS is on the laptop, you can restore Windows settings without contacting the service center.

There are still other valid options - for example, finding a disk or image on the Internet with a rollback section recorded on it. Most often they can be found on torrents.

Another way is to reinstall the latest version of Windows. And the last way: on the official websites of manufacturers, you can sometimes find ads for the sale of a data disc for resuming a system.

If the OS version on the laptop is factory, you can restore the settings in a simple way. The only caveat - for each brand of laptop, the algorithm of action is different. The general procedure for resuming such:

  1. Disk C will be cleared of user files.
  2. This will format the system partition of the disk and reinstall Windows. You do not need to re-enter the product key.
  3. System drivers and programs included in the standard package will be reinstalled.

However, the rollback of Windows settings is not a panacea for all device malfunctions. Such a solution is only suitable for software problems.

Preparation for renewal

Most users are sure that before rolling back to the factory settings, it is enough to transfer personal films / music / photos, etc. to an external medium.

However, it is advisable to check folders such as My Documents and Downloads, where the files you need are often located. In addition, it is worth taking care of copying mail, passwords, contact lists and other important information. Otherwise, restoring all this will be at least problematic.

After this, care should be taken to save the installers of the necessary programs. An alternative is the presence of an already configured Internet connection, with which you can download the necessary programs.

Acer laptop factory settings

To restore factory settings on Acer laptops, turn off the computer. Then turn it on again, holding Alt and pressing the F10 key about once every half second. The system will ask for a password. If you have never done a factory reset on this laptop before, then the default password is 000000 (six zeros). In the menu that appears, select Factory reset.

In addition, you can reset the factory settings on the Acer laptop and from the Windows operating system - find the eRecovery Management utility in the Acer programs and use the Recovery tab in this utility.

ASUS Notebook

Turn on your laptop and press the F2 button. The standard BIOS menu appears on the display, where you need to disable the Boot Booster option. It affects the download speed and is installed by default.

To disable this option, follow these steps: open the “Boot” tab, then “Boot Booster” and click on “Disabled”. Save the specified settings (“Save changes and exit”). Wait for the computer to restart automatically and turn it off.

The next time you turn on the device, press the F9 button, thereby calling the Recovery utility, which will prepare the data for resumption. Confirm the request to reset the parameters, after which the application will automatically delete the user data and files and automatically reinstall Windows.

Attention: during recovery, the device must ensure a permanent connection to the network. During the operation, the laptop will restart several times.

HP Notebook PC

Disconnect external media (flash drives, etc.) in advance.

When turning on, press the F11 button. The window for the rollback utility - Recovery Manager will open on the display. If it doesn’t work, you can start it in the standard mode - just find it in the list of preinstalled applications.

Acer laptop

While loading, hold down the Alt key while simultaneously pressing F10. A dialog box appears asking for the password. If you are rolling back the OS for the first time, the default password is 000000. Next, select the “Factory reset” option.

The second way to reset Acer to its initial settings - in the standard Windows menu, find the eRecovery Management utility and select the "Recovery" item. After that, the system will roll back on its own.

Samsung laptop

While the device is loading, press the F4 button several times. An alternative option is to find the preinstalled Recovery Solution utility in the list of programs.

After starting the utility, select the “Recovery” option, then “Full recovery”. Then you need to select a renewal point - the state in which you plan to return the computer.

For factory settings, this is the “Computer Initial Status” item. Accept the utility offer to reboot the device. Then follow its instructions until the parameters are fully resumed. Restart the device to complete the rollback process.

Toshiba Notebook

With the laptop turned off, hold the 0 button (not on the top row of numbers, but on the right, on the number block). Then turn on the computer and wait for the beep. Key 0 can be released.

Follow the instructions of the program until the system is fully resumed.

Sony laptop

During computer startup, press the F10 button several times. A window will appear where you need to select “Launch VAIO Recovery Center”.

This application will offer a choice: restoring the entire system or just drive C. It is advisable to choose a full resume, because a “clean” OS will work much better than if you restore one partition.

As in other cases, the utility will do everything on its own and no user intervention is required.

In addition to the methods described above, it is possible to roll back the device to the factory settings using additionally installed utilities, which can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s websites, and such programs are more functional than standard ones.

Samsung laptop factory settings

In order to reset the Samsung laptop to the factory settings, run the Samsung Recovery Solution utility in Windows, or if it was deleted or Windows does not boot, press the F4 key when the computer is turned on, the Samsung laptop recovery utility to factory settings will start. Next, follow these steps:

  1. Select Restore
  2. Select Complete Restore
  3. Select a recovery point for Computer Initial Status.
  4. When asked to restart the computer, answer “Yes”, after the restart, follow all system instructions.

After the laptop is fully restored to the factory state and you enter Windows, you need to perform another reboot to activate all the settings made by the recovery program.

Reset Toshiba Laptop to Factory Settings

In order to start the factory restore utility on Toshiba laptops, turn off the computer, and then:

  • Press and hold the 0 (zero) button on the keyboard (not on the number pad on the right)
  • Turn on the laptop
  • Release the 0 key when the computer starts to squeak.

After that, the program will start to restore the laptop to the factory settings, follow its instructions.

And suddenly it will be interesting:

Tell me on the laptop Lenovo onekey button does not work. How to restore a laptop to factory settings?

02/10/2018 at 08:24

Depends on the installed system. If, for example, someone manually set the system for you different from the one from the store, then the factory recovery image probably doesn’t exist on the laptop anymore (because onekey recovery doesn’t work)

02/18/2018 at 13:33

I have an Asus laptop, I want to return it to the factory settings, I read everything that needs to be done and saw the sentence “After this, the process of recovering and reinstalling Windows happens automatically”, can windows itself reinstall if I have it pirated?

02/19/2018 at 12:36

If you have erased the factory recovery partition (usually hidden at 10-30 GB) or it was not there - no, it will not be restored.

03/14/2018 at 19:14

Hello, I have an Asus c win 10 laptop. During the last update, I turned off the laptop, now it doesn’t turn on - during the download, “an attempt to restore the previous version ...” appears and reboots. Tell me what to do (F9 does not work)

03/15/2018 at 07:59

In an extreme case, you can do this: somewhere else, create a bootable USB flash drive with 10 of the original one, boot from it and there, on the second screen of the installation program, click “system restore” in the lower left, then try restore points or reset the system.

03/19/2018 at 08:29

Hello and why there is no Lenovo laptop

03/19/2018 at 09:10

Many Lenovo have a special button for rollback - Novo, with the help of it, a reset is made to the factory settings.
In general, the article, of course, needs to be updated.

Hello! After reinstalling Windows, when watching a video on YouTube, the image became intermittent. Sometimes horizontal stripes appear. Reinstalled the video driver - does not help. Notebook hp 630.

03/20/2018 at 07:52

Did you install native drivers from the HP website? To the network (Wi-Fi / Ethernet) - too?
Tried to enable or disable hardware video acceleration in the browser?

04/13/2018 at 17:26

hello, I have tried everything with a black screen and the cursor doesn’t help, maybe I don’t understand what, I updated Win 8 to 10 but didn’t delete anything, like I stopped showing it after sleep. Help

04/14/2018 at 08:31

And if you turn off the laptop by holding the power button for a long time (10-15 seconds), then it shows when turned on? If yes, try disabling the quick start of Windows 10

05/05/2018 at 20:02

Did everything as it is written, but still I can’t open the modem

05/13/2018 at 09:10

why f1-f12 do not work + they press f5 so that I can’t renew the laptop!

06/11/2018 at 15:42

Good afternoon, tell me, is it necessary to disable the function in the Boot Booster BIOS? To reset to factory defaults on a laptop
I have asus windows 7 initial.
And another question to the factory is the same as a hard reset on a smartphone? And can it be that after resetting the Windows settings do not boot at all?

06/12/2018 at 09:34

Hello. No, not necessarily. It's just that sometimes it interferes with entering the BIOS and generally performing actions before loading the system.
Yes, this is a type of hard reset on a smartphone.
As for not loading: in theory, if the disk was damaged or some files in the recovery partition - yes, it can.

06/13/2018 at 15:37

Tell me, did the recovery the day before yesterday, can there be such that some kind of garbage remained on drive C? But it’s a lot of bugs whether it is possible to do the recovery again, but can the Windows itself be removed to the entire disk? I have an asus laptop for the first time when I chose, I chose the first item to restore Windows to the first partition
And which is better to choose a recovery point reset to factory? It doesn’t turn off; there is no blue screen, but when you open the application, it takes a long time to open and sometimes the explorer doesn’t respond and Google doesn’t work; the error says maybe some garbage has remained on the disk? Does it hurt to do the whole drive?

06/14/2018 at 09:56

I can’t answer exactly like that remotely without seeing the situation. It may not be in the garbage, but, for example, that after a reset, it downloads and installs updates (because of which it can slow down, but it will pass over time).

06/25/2018 at 18:03

Hello, do you also need to restart your emachines laptop as an acer laptop?

06/26/2018 at 10:56

On e-machines, it’s kind of like Alt to hold and press F10 when you turn it on (if you are about to start factory recovery).

07/03/2018 at 13:57

I change the hard drive from the native (in which there was a built-in win 8) to a new, clean one. How can I copy the recovery partition from an old disk to install on a new one?

07/04/2018 at 10:28

Hello.

Dell Inspiron.

14.08.2018 в 14:03

Нет, не потребуется. Но при этом возврат в исходное состояние — это и есть переустановка ОС (т.е. она заново устанавливается в исходном виде, при условии, что вы не стерли раздел восстановления).

31.08.2018 в 21:28

But in general, I have such a problem, charging does not work for me, well, it's just that 0% is in place, I want to make a full refund, but it is very long and the laptop turns off by 5-10% (2 hours pass)
The laptop turned off by 10% and now gives an error when turned on

09.09.2018 at 11:36

I have such a problem, followed the instructions (I have an Asus netbook), as a result, a black screen with the inscription "BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart", performed a key combination, does not help, reboots (not until the end), That's it same thing, black screen ...

09.09.2018 at 12:06

And at what stage did this black screen appear? Did the recovery itself start? And successfully passed?

09/11/2018 at 16:00

I have this problem: after changing the monitor frequency on a laptop ( using the Custom Resolution Utility program to a value of 75 hertz, the screen clarity deteriorated, etc. e. started to see pixels (these changes were made on windows 8.1). Now I don’t know how to return everything back or reset the screen to factory settings. (I reinstalled drivers and windows 8.1). (When reinstalling windwos, the screen frequency became 64 Hz, and after installing the video card drivers it was 60 Hz, but in safe loading mode windwos the frequency was also 64 Hz). (The native Windows was 10).

10/06/2018 at 00:24

Hello. Help is needed . In general, the thing is - there is a trident 3 PC with a disk, recovery. A clean Windows was installed from a USB flash drive, 10. The recovery disk is hidden, but it is deleted. If you return the computer to its original state, a clean Windows is installed. And not factory with drivers. How to put the factory? The disk is not deleted with it. It can be seen in disk management takes about 15 GB

10/06/2018 at 09:44

Hello. Look for the manuals for your PC, with a high probability you can start the recovery from this hidden section with some key when you turn it on.

10/23/2018 at 15:56

For some reason, I press F4 on the Samsung laptop, but I do not have the same window as in the picture! I have a window called Windows Boot Manager and on the first line it says “Windows failed to start. A recent hardware ... "how can I remove this and return the laptop to factory settings?

10.24.2018 at 08:50

Do you basically have a recovery partition on your laptop? It’s just that if you manually set 10-ku / 8-ku, then it’s quite possible that it isn’t there anymore and the solution is to set it up again.
Also, just in case: is the hard disk visible in the BIOS?

11/07/2018 at 07:42

Hello! I do not have Boot Booster on Asus. I have Boot Option UEFI Boot. Sincerely, Vladimir.
I wanted to remove 7 Windows from the factory.

11/08/2018 at 11:30

Is it just from the keyboard when you turn it on? You basically do not need this option if you are already quietly entering the BIOS.

11/23/2018 at 02:03

Good afternoon, I have a Toshiba laptop, when I turn on the logo appears, below f2 and f12. then a black screen and a white underline in the upper left corner. Help me please.

11/23/2018 at 11:37

Hello. And then what happened? In general, the problem suggests that for some reason it cannot boot: it is possible that it is trying to boot from the wrong drive, or it may be a problem reading from the hard drive.

12/03/2018 at 21:46

Good afternoon.
Question about “All user data will be deleted (in some cases, only from“ Drive C ”, everything will remain on drive D).”
Data is usually deleted only from the system partition or from the entire hard disk, which manufacturers have it? I do not think that many have an external hard drive where you can dump information from all partitions.

12/04/2018 at 12:50

It happens in different ways. But, in any case, the process does not start “blindly”, i.e. you can read about what will be done before the start of the procedure.

12/27/2018 at 19:41

When I pressed f4 nothing happens on my black screen

01/27/2019 at 23:14

Good afternoon. The asus bios 2.15.1227 laptop did not find the boot booster function in the boot section, there is a boot configuration, clicked disabled there. Rebooted, turned off the laptop. I turn it on, press F9, but there are no downloads, there is a task manager screen, and there you can either select the windiws7 download or check the memory. What am I doing wrong?

01/28/2019 at 12:51

Is the manufacturer recovery section live? (hidden partition on the hard drive, usually at least 10 GB).

01/28/2019 at 19:26

I didn’t look, but how can I find it? I understand that if there is no hidden section, then it will not work to reinstall.

01/29/2019 at 11:40

For example, see Disk Management (Win + R - diskmgmt.msc). Yes, such a recovery would not work without him.

01/29/2019 at 19:03

Hidden section is this which is not named? If so, then I have two unnamed partitions, one for 200 mb, the other for 25 gb. Where 25 GB it is written that the recovery section. The laptop took a bu, and as I understand it here is unlicensed windows 7 maximum. Although the laptop came from the factory with windows 7 home basic, even the sticker where the key is written remains, is it interesting if it works if you install windows 7 home?

01/30/2019 at 09:02

In general, it’s very similar to the description that it’s exactly what it is ... And what kind of laptop model (i.e. not only the brand, but also the exact model), in theory it may be that there is some other combination.
As for the key: yes, most likely it will. True, sometimes it happens that activation does not work right away and you have to perform activation by phone (it is relatively simple there - calling a toll free number, entering a key, receiving a code from an answering machine).
